AGA launches Obesity and Nutrition Education Initiative

American Gastroenterological Association collaborates with Healthology

Business Announcement

American Gastroenterological Association

Bethesda, MD – January 13, 2004 – The American Gastroenterological Association, the largest gastrointestinal society in the United States, announced today the launch of an Obesity and Nutrition Education Initiative. The primary objective of this initiative is to generate productive patient-physician dialogue about weight management issues. Educational programs will be produced for consumers in collaboration with Healthology and distributed through Healthology's extensive online distribution network of more than 4,000 sites. In addition, gastroenterologists will be provided with counseling tools to enable them to implement and track incremental improvements in the nutritional status of their patients.

Three consumer webcast programs have thus far been produced in collaboration with the Washington University Center for Human Nutrition. The topics include childhood obesity, dieting approaches and surgical options for weight loss. These programs can be viewed on the AGA's web site at http://aga.healthology.com.

"With two-thirds of adult Americans overweight or obese, nutrition education and weight management must become a priority for all physicians," states Sam Klein, MD, Danforth Professor of Medicine and Nutritional Science at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and recent Chairman of the AGA's Section on Nutrition and Obesity. "The Obesity and Nutrition Education Initiative will make a major contribution towards addressing this health crisis by providing gastroenterologists and consumers with an array of educational and counseling tools. We believe that it is important for gastroenterologists to take a leadership role in helping their patients manage their weight because of the relationship between obesity and many gastrointestinal diseases."
