Elsevier, American Chemical Society to link services to improve researchers' access

Business Announcement

American Chemical Society

Elsevier and two divisions of the American Chemical Society — Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and Publications — have announced that they have agreed to provide linking between their services for scientists. Under the agreement:

  • Users of Elsevier products and services (such as Science Direct, MDL databases and ChemWeb) will be able to link directly to ACS scientific journals

  • Users of CAS products and services (SciFinder®, STN®, and others) will be able to link, via ChemPort, directly to Elsevier scientific journals.

Links between the services of these prestigious publishers will be completed prior to the end of 2003 making it possible for scientists to navigate this scientific information seamlessly no matter where they begin their research.

  • Elsevier journals will join ChemPort Reference Linking, enabling users of Elsevier journals access to ACS scientific journals and CAS database records. (Available in 2004)

Elsevier, the world's largest publisher of scientific journals and the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, are both leading publishers of chemical information.

Linking this information provides new pathways to a wealth of scientific information. CAS has indexed and summarized chemistry-related articles from more than 40,000 scientific journals and the Publications Division offers 31 key scientific journals to scientists worldwide. Elsevier publishes more than 1,800 journals and provides access to its secondary databases via ScienceDirect, and its Web communities, such as ChemWeb.

"We are pleased to work cooperatively with Elsevier to provide this new linking to the scientific community," said CAS Director Robert Massie. "As stewards of the world's largest repository of bibliographic and substance information in chemistry and related sciences, we see linking our services with the full text of Elsevier journal articles through ChemPort as completely aligned with our mission to facilitate scientific discourse. We are serving ACS members and the world research community."

"As the world's largest publisher of scientific journals, Elsevier aims to create an environment for its authors and users in which information is deeply interlinked and optimally disclosed," said Martin Tanke, Managing Director of Elsevier's Life Sciences Division. "This new linking arrangement is in line with Elsevier's strategy to extend our global leadership position in providing high quality scientific, technical and medical information solutions to research scientists and information professionals, using new technology to bring all its scientific content to the desktop of researchers anywhere in the world."

"The goal of the American Chemical Society Publications Division is to provide its members and the worldwide scientific community with a comprehensive collection of high-quality information products and services that advance the practice of the chemical and related sciences," said ACS Publications Director Robert Bovenschulte. "We are pleased to be part of this arrangement, which so clearly benefits our community."

About ACS

A nonprofit organization with a membership of more than 161,000 chemists and chemical engineers, the American Chemical Society publishes scientific journals and databases, convenes major research conferences, and provides educational, science policy and career programs in chemistry. Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, is an organization of scientists creating and delivering the most complete and effective digital information environment for scientific research and discovery. CAS provides pathways to published research in the world's journal and patent literature — virtually everything relevant to chemistry plus a wealth of information in the life sciences and a wide range of other scientific disciplines — back to the beginning of the twentieth century. CAS publishes the print version of Chemical Abstracts (CA), related publications and CD-ROM services; operates the CAS Chemical Registry; produces a family of online databases; and offers the SciFinder desktop research tool. CAS operates STN International, a network of scientific and technical databases, in association with FIZ Karlsruhe in Germany and the Japan Science and Technology Corporation. The CAS Web site is at http://www.cas.org
