The new chair is the first funded by QUALCOMM Incorporated at the Jacobs School through its corporate commitment to Cal-(IT)². Through the institute, the company has also pledged endowments for three other chairs at the Jacobs School, as well as one at UCSD's graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. Gupta's chair is the twentieth at the Jacobs School, and the second of eleven new endowed chairs pledged by industry partners through Cal-(IT)2.

Rajesh Gupta is an expert in embedded systems and mobile computing, including the integration of software and hardware to make computers more portable and energy efficient. Gupta's research interests include wireless systems on chip, computer-aided design (CAD) for embedded and portable systems, embedded software, and algorithms for the automation of very large-scale integration (VLSI) circuit design. He joined the Jacobs School in November 2002, from UC Irvine, and previously taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1993, and was a senior design engineer at Intel Corporation from 1986-89. Gupta is the author or co-author of three patents and over 120 research articles on various aspects of embedded systems. In 1995, he published the book "Co-Synthesis of Hardware and Software for Digital Embedded Systems" (Kluwer).
