UCSD's Gupta assumes first Qualcomm Chair in Embedded Microsystems

QUALCOMM funds chair through Cal-(IT)2

Grant and Award Announcement

University of California - San Diego

San Diego, May 28, 2003 -- The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Jacobs School of Engineering and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology [Cal-(IT)2] today announced that Rajesh Gupta will be the first holder of the Qualcomm Endowed Chair in Embedded Microsystems at UCSD. Gupta is a professor in the Jacobs School's Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department.

"Professor Gupta is doing cutting-edge work in the field of embedded systems for wireless and other sectors," said Frieder Seible, Dean of the Jacobs School. "QUALCOMM's generosity in endowing this chair is an investment not only in Professor Gupta, but also in the many students, researchers and technologies that he will have a hand in shaping for years to come."

The new chair is the first funded by QUALCOMM Incorporated at the Jacobs School through its corporate commitment to Cal-(IT)². Through the institute, the company has also pledged endowments for three other chairs at the Jacobs School, as well as one at UCSD's graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies. Gupta's chair is the twentieth at the Jacobs School, and the second of eleven new endowed chairs pledged by industry partners through Cal-(IT)2.

"These endowed chairs help ensure future engineers are taught by professors at the cutting-edge of theory and technology," said Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, chairman and CEO of QUALCOMM. "QUALCOMM is proud to be associated with Professor Gupta's expertise and dedication to mobile computing and to support his role in the development and education of future technology leaders."

Rajesh Gupta is an expert in embedded systems and mobile computing, including the integration of software and hardware to make computers more portable and energy efficient. Gupta's research interests include wireless systems on chip, computer-aided design (CAD) for embedded and portable systems, embedded software, and algorithms for the automation of very large-scale integration (VLSI) circuit design. He joined the Jacobs School in November 2002, from UC Irvine, and previously taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1993, and was a senior design engineer at Intel Corporation from 1986-89. Gupta is the author or co-author of three patents and over 120 research articles on various aspects of embedded systems. In 1995, he published the book "Co-Synthesis of Hardware and Software for Digital Embedded Systems" (Kluwer).

Headquartered in San Diego, QUALCOMM was a founding industry partner of Cal-(IT)2 in December 2001. "Thanks to the leadership role of Irwin Jacobs, QUALCOMM was an early and strong proponent of the institute and its interdisciplinary mission," said Cal-(IT)2 director Larry Smarr, the Harry E. Gruber Professor in the CSE department. "For his part, Rajesh Gupta has been a very active participant in Cal-(IT)2, not just since coming to UCSD last November, but prior to that at the University of California-Irvine -- UCSD's partner in the institute -- as leader of our Interfaces and Software Systems group there."

QUALCOMM Incorporated (http://www.qualcomm.com) is a leader in developing and delivering innovative digital wireless communications products and services based on the Company's CDMA digital technology.
