Winners of nationwide student chemistry poster competition named

American Chemical Society

Winners of a nationwide K-12 student poster competition depicting how "chemistry keeps us clean" were announced by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, at its recent spring national meeting in New Orleans. The competition is in support of National Chemistry Week, sponsored annually each October by the Society. Each winner received a digital camera and each honorable mention received a handheld two-way radio.

Winners also were announced for the Society's undergraduate college students' collection drive competition, a social awareness activity that encourages students to collect personal hygiene products for charities in their local areas. The first place winner received $350; honorable mention received $150.

College Collection Drive

Winner
Texarkana College Chemistry Club in Texarkana, Texas
The club collected and donated 2,127 pounds of personal hygiene products to Randy Sam's Homeless Shelter and the Battered Women's Shelter in Texarkana.

Honorable Mention
Drake Chemistry Club in Des Moines, Iowa
The club collected and donated 1,306 pounds of personal hygiene products to St. Joseph's Homeless Shelter in Des Moines.

The theme for the 2003 National Chemistry Week, October 19-25, is "Earth's Atmosphere and Beyond."
