International medical graduates (IMGs) --physicians who graduated from medical schools outside Canada -- comprise 23% of all licensed physicians in Canada, but the estimated number of unlicensed IMGs is between 2000 and 4000 in Ontario alone.

In an attempt to better understand the demographic and educational characteristics of IMG applicants, Rodney Crutcher and colleagues surveyed applicants to the second iteration of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) match and identified their preferred clinical disciplines and practice locations.

Crutcher and colleagues also report that almost half (49.2%) would prefer to practise in communities with a population of less than 100,000 people, but just 7.8% would prefer to practice in a rural community with a population of less than 10,000.
