TOKYO, Japan, Nov. 18, 2002 – DuPont Chief Science and Technology Officer Dr. Thomas M. Connelly today will address more than 1,200 leaders at the Japanese government-sponsored "Business-Academia-Government Summit" in Tokyo as part of a three-nation visit to the Asia Pacific region.

"Entering our third century, DuPont has a rich tradition of collaborating with academia, governments and other businesses worldwide to enhance the quality of life through science. We are especially pleased this week that leaders in Japan, Korea, and China are recognizing and supporting our collaborative efforts and partnerships."
At the invitation of Japan's Minister of Science and Technology Policy Hiroyuki Hosoda, Connelly will address leaders representing various governments, universities and businesses at the summit. The summit will serve as a platform to identify best practices of collaboration among businesses, academia and governments that can contribute to formulating management strategies and advancing science.
In his remarks, Connelly will detail a number of DuPont-led collaborative initiatives as the company begins its third century – from its early days in 1802 as a gunpowder manufacturer to today's innovative $35 million DuPont-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Alliance to collaboratively advance research and development in materials and biological sciences. Japan Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, North Carolina Governor Michael F. Easley, University of Tokyo President Takeshi Sasaki, and Honda Motor President and CEO Hiroyuki Yoshino are among the other guest speakers at the summit.
On Wednesday in Seoul, Connelly will meet with a broad cross section of CTO's based in Korea and will discuss the strategic direction of DuPont research and development.
At the Ministry of Science and Technology in Beijing on Thursday, Connelly will join China's Minister of Science and Technology in presenting the third annual "DuPont Innovation Award" to Chinese scientists for their work on 10 selected projects. In a partnership with the Ministry, DuPont offers the Innovation Award to encourage and recognize innovation by Chinese scientists. Entries are evaluated on both innovation and applicability. Past recipients have enhanced productivity or efficiency in agricultural, industrial and medical areas.
