BOSTON, Mass. – Northeastern University’s Center for Technological Management and Entrepreneurship last night, announced two winners of this year’s $60K Business Plan Competition. They are:

  • CU Pharmaceuticals, Inc. - Submitted by Kim Lewis and Slava Epstein, Professors, Department of Biology. CU Pharmaceuticals is focused on identifying and developing new drugs isolated from previously unculturable organisms. Microorganisms traditionally have been a large and productive source of pharmaceutical compounds, which account for over $30 billion in US sales. The company has developed a patented method of culturing previously unculturable organisms.
  • Chemical Signatures, Inc. - Submitted by Albert Robbat, MBA student. CSI has developed an ultra fast system capable of identifying compounds of interest using mass spectrometers in life science/biopharma, homeland security, and environmental applications. CSI’s unique data analysis software leverages the high cost of instrumentation against the need to obtain real-time information now. CSI’s technology is patented.

The two winning entries were chosen from more than 250 submissions to compete in the final round of the competition. CU Pharmaceuticals, Inc. earned $40,000 and Chemical Signatures, Inc. earned $20,000 from Northeastern’s Center for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship.

Sponsors of this year’s competition include BancBoston Ventures, Inc., Deloitte & Touche LLP, Hale and Dorr LLP and Stonepath Group.

The seven judges of the competition represented Altron, Inc., Hale and Dorr, Braintree Laboratories, First Health, First Light Capital and Signature Capital.
