A more unified structure of health care delivery has resulted in more patients bringing gynecologic issues to their primary care physicians. However, clinical experience in gynecology during residency training has often been insufficient. A new book, "Practical Gynecology, A Guide for the Primary Care Physician," has been published by the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM) to help physicians incorporate gynecologic problems into primary care practice.

According to co-editors Janice Ryden, MD, FACP, and Paul D. Blumenthal, MD, MPH, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the book originated from a curriculum in gynecology for internal medicine residents at the university. "Practical Gynecology, A Guide for the Primary Care Physician," evolved to include a wider range of topics written by 38 contributing editors, including Women's Health Series editor Pamela Charney, MD, FACP, of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Arranged in 13 chapters, with an index and color plates, the book is tailored to meet the needs of physicians with different levels of gynecologic knowledge and clinical experience. The fundamentals are reviewed, yet current and detailed evidence-based information on a wide variety of topics is also offered.

The chapters are designed to be accessible, with frequent use of tables and highlighted important points. Practical guidance is given on topics such as examination and screening, menstrual disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, breast problems, domestic violence, and menopause.
