Europe surfs for free on Science's Next Wave

Next Wave introduces pan-European portal

Grant and Award Announcement

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

Early-career scientists in Europe can now learn about the next hotbeds of research, get advice on making the leap from bench to business, and find encouragement for their academic careers--all for free--from Science's Next Wave, an online career development magazine published weekly by AAAS and its research journal Science.

Science's Next Wave's new pan-European web portal brings cost-free access to the Next Wave to researchers from Ireland to Estonia. The free access is sponsored by the European Science Foundation, for 27 countries that are represented by its 70 member organizations.

"We're thrilled that, through our partnership with the ESF, Next Wave has the opportunity to fill the need for a continent-wide resource to which its young scientists-wherever they are-can turn for advice, mentoring, and a greater sense of community," says Ellis Rubinstein, Editor of Science. He goes on to say that " by working closely with ESF-a group that through its network of 70 member organisations is extremely well-connected to the science scene throughout Europe-Next Wave will be able to successfully address the special challenges that Europe's diverse cultures and academic systems present."

The countries included in the free access are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

The portal uses a new access system that recognizes and compiles Internet provider (IP) addresses by country, essentially treating each country as an individual subscriber to Next Wave. Researchers that access the magazine from an IP address registered in any of the 27 counties will be taken directly to the Next Wave's content, with no sign-in name or password required.

The new portal is part of the Next Wave's continuing efforts to reach out to international scientists. The online magazine already contains a monthly "global feature," as well as special country homepages for Singapore, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Canada, as well as the United States.

The magazine's international staff plans to add special editorial content, aimed specifically at its European readers, to the new portal in the near future, said Crispin Taylor, editor of Science's Next Wave.

Graduate students, postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior science faculty are the Next Wave's primary audience, although many scientists browse its electronic pages throughout their careers. The magazine covers trends in the science job market, provides information on careers away from academia, and offers job-hunting advice. Other special issues covered by the Next Wave include juggling family and career goals and negotiating the graduate student, postdoc, and early faculty experience. The site also contains information on grants and other funding sources around the world.
