UC San Diego anthropologist receives National Academy of Sciences award for scientific reviewing

University of California, San Diego anthropologist Roy D’Andrade has been honored by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) for excellence in scientific reviewing over the past decade. 

A professor of anthropology at UCSD since 1970, D’Andrade is one of 14 individuals honored by the NAS this year for their outstanding scientific contributions. According to a statement released by the NAS, D’Andrade was selected to win the $10,000 prize “for his creative synthesis of intersections of anthropology with psychology and his insightful interpretations of historical trends shaping the future goals of anthropology.

”D’Andrade, whose research interests include cognitive anthropology, quantitative methods, anthropological theory, and American culture, is a former chair of the UCSD Department of Anthropology. He received his Ph. D. in social anthropology from Harvard University and his B.A. from University of Connecticut. Before joining the UCSD faculty, D’Andrade held teaching positions at Harvard, Stanford and Rutgers universities. He is a member of the NAS and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The award was established by Annual Reviews, Inc., the Institute for Scientific Information, and The Scientist in honor of J. Murray Luck and has been presented by the NAS annually since 1979.
