Society for Women's Health Research

The Society for Women's Health Research has published proceedings from its Second Annual Conference on Sex and Gene Expression (SAGE) held on March 8 – 11, 2001 at Wake Forest University. The meeting created a forum for basic and clinical scientists to share research findings that contribute to the emerging field of sex-based biology. The meeting brought together researchers from varied backgrounds, ranging from microbiology to endocrinology.

The 2001 conference featured a range of topics, including:

  • Sex differences that shape the earliest events in mammalian embryologic development.

  • The impact of gonadal hormones, both during fetal development and later in life, on cognitive functions.

  • Maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA and paternally inherited Y chromosome DNA as tools for studying human evolution and migration.

  • Mitochondrial diseases – contributions from nuclear and mitochondrial genes.

  • Strategies for understanding gene-environment interactions underlying common diseases.

  • X chromosome contributions to sex differences in mammals.

The Society for Women’s Health Research is the nation’s only not-for-profit organization whose sole mission is to improve the health of women through research. Founded in 1990, the Society brought to national attention the need for the appropriate inclusion of women in major medical research studies and the resulting need for more information about conditions affecting women. The Society advocates increased funding for research on women’s health, encourages the study of sex differences that may affect the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, and promotes the inclusion of women in medical research studies. Visit the Society’s Web site at http://www.womens-health.org for more information.
