The Women's and Children's Hospital has won the coveted Diamond Serif Award of The Australian Institute of Professional Communicators for its inaugural Young Investigator Award 2000. The award was presented at the Gala Dinner at the Brisbane Conrad International On Friday 27th October.

The Diamond Serif Award has not been won by a South Australian organisation for over eight years.

Hospital Public Relations Officer, Dr Edna Bates said, " We are absolutely delighted and proud of our win.

"The judges commended the Young Investigator Award for its innovative and proactive role in recognising the research achievements of our younger researchers and their contribution to the health of future generations," Dr Bates said.

Award Committee Chairman Associate Professor Eric Haan said, " One of the strengths of the award was the way it used a variety of communication techniques - invitations, posters, email, a website, on hold phone messages and media publicity.

"Another strength was that the Young Investigator Award stressed to young researchers the importance of being able to communicate their research to the media and the public.

"The Award was held at no cost to the hospital with a small budget totally funded by the sponsors - BioRad, Crown Scientific, Novo Nordisc, Life Technologies, Abbott Diagnostics and Australian Laboratory Services.

"Hospital staff volunteered their time and skills to the project, allowing us to come in on budget. We are thrilled with the outcome," he said.

South Australia came home with a total of 12 awards (diamond, one gold, four silver, two bronze and four highly commended) out of 47 awarded nationally.

The Serif awards were organised by the Society of Business Communicators, Queensland and The Australian Institute of Professional Communicators.
