(Sacramento, Calif., Livermore, Calif., October 18, 2000) — The University of California, Davis, Health System and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory today formed the Industry Partners Consortium for Bio and Medical Technology Development. The group provides private-sector companies with access to medical and technological expertise to assist them in developing innovative medical products.

Private-sector companies interested in joining the IPC are invited to attend the first Bio and Medical Technology Summit on Nov. 7-8 at the University of California Laurel Heights Conference Facility in San Francisco. The summit, hosted by UC Davis and Lawrence Livermore, will feature seminars on optical cancer diagnostics, molecular oncology and other advances in the detection and treatment of cancer, Bio-MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems), chromosome region-specific expressed gene in solution and applications in telemedicine.

The IPC is a joint effort between UC Davis and Lawrence Livermore to form partnerships with industry. The goal of the consortium is to improve patient outcomes by developing new medical technologies that apply the medical expertise of doctors at UC Davis Health System and the technical expertise of scientists at Livermore Lab. Through collaborations with industry partners, the IPC will accelerate the development of these new bio and medical technologies so that they are commercially available to physicians and patients.

By bringing together leading scientific and medical experts with industry, the consortium will help translate research discoveries into practical applications that improve human health and well being.
