1. Search the abstracts

The printed volume of abstracts for this meeting will not be available until late November. All abstracts have now been posted on the AGU web site and may be access by a search tool, located at http://www.agu.org/meetings/waisfm00adv.html.

Finding Sessions and Abstracts

The names, numerical designations, dates, times, and room numbers of all Meeting sessions have been posted on the AGU web site at http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm00glan.html. By clicking on the name of a Section (e.g., Hydrology, Atmospheric Science), all of the sessions under that Section's auspices will be displayed. Clicking on any of these sessions will open a list of papers and/or posters associated with that session. Clicking on the name of a particular paper will open the abstract for that paper, including name and contact information for the lead author.

Many sessions are jointly sponsored by two or more Sections. The Union Sessions are expected to have the broadest interdisciplinary appeal.

Finding Abstracts of Interest to You

Reporters and public information officers may search for abstracts of particular interest to them, by looking up the:

    Name of a scientist
Name of an institution (e.g., university, government agency)
Geographic location (e.g., city, state, or country)
    Topic (e.g., volcano, Io, erosion)
These search parameters may be combined (e.g., papers on tsunamis by scientists in Japan). To access the search tool, go to http://www.agu.org/meetings/waisfm00adv.html. Full instructions are included on that page.

Note: If searching for papers from a particular institution, it is often more effective to search by e-mail address, rather than the name of the institution. The latter may be written in different ways by various authors (e.g., UCLA, University of California Los Angeles, Univ. of Cal. at Los Angeles, etc.), but all of their e-mail addresses will include "ucla." The search key word "Affiliation" covers both names of institutions and their locations (e.g., look for either University of Arizona or Tucson under Affiliation).

2. Press conferences (Preliminary)

We are in the process of developing a range of press conferences on scientific advances being reported at Fall Meeting. As always, the press conferences only scratch the surface of the thousands of newsworthy oral and poster presentations, and reporters who comb through the abstracts are almost guaranteed to find exciting sessions that will be, essentially, exclusives.

Following are some of the press conference topics currently under consideration. They are, of course, subject to change. A detailed press conference list, including dates, times, and participants, will be included in a subsequent advisory.

The Bastille Day solar storm (aka Revenge of the Sun King)
Voyagers reach the outer heliosphere, remain in contact with Earth
Galileo calls on Ganymede
Chicxulub: New information about a critical event in Earth's history
Lost cities off the Egyptian coast: what have we learned?
Coping with uncertainties in climate change research and policy activities
Effects of natural hazards in prehistoric times
Fire in boreal forests
The science of carbon sequestration
Microbial survival and interaction with minerals
The impact of volcanic activity on Earth's atmosphere
Preliminary results of the Hawaii drilling project
Volcanology in 2010: what will have changed?
Predicting submarine mass failures and tsunami hazards

3. Who's coming?

Following is the list of pre-registered Press Room registrants. If you believe you have preregistered, but your name is not below, please resubmit the registration form, found at the end of this message. All press registrants who were not previously on the AGU e-mail distribution list for press releases have been added to it, in order to receive this and subsequent advisories. If you do not wish to remain on the list after Fall Meeting, please inform Harvey Leifert hleifert@agu.org.
