Opening the on-line pipeline for U.S., Russian and Ukrainian science journals

Meeting Announcement

American Institute of Physics

The Internet is becoming one of the most important mediums for scientists around the world to share peer reviewed scientific research. Internet distribution of U.S., Russian and Ukrainian physics journals will be one of the topics discussed at an international publishing forum being co-hosted by the American Institute of Physics, a leading publisher of physics journals, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Science Publishing House MAIK Interperiodica on October 4th and 5th in New York.

In the information age, scientists around the world are able to access research faster than ever before. AIP has responded to the need to bring peer reviewed research into this technological era through it’s Online Journal Publishing Service (OJPS) web-site (http://ojps.aip.org/). OJPS lists nearly 100 journals that can be accessed through the Internet, including translations of Russian and Ukrainian journals. “We see how important it is for the physics community to share research around the world,” says Dr. Marc Brodsky, Executive Director of AIP. “Historically, international collaboration has only accelerated scientific progress. By putting these journals on the Internet we bring our community closer together, and foster continued collaboration.”

AIP is building on it’s 44 year history with the Russian Academy of sciences and their journals by adding the translated research to OJPS. Maya Flikop, with AIP Special Publications and Translations, says “Today, more and more scientists, libraries and readers want on-line access to journals.”

The upcoming international forum will give AIP management the chance to come together with their counterparts at the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as the Russian and Ukrainian Journal editors, to discuss editorial practices and publishing policies. “It helps to have communication going face to face,” Flikop says, especially when the two groups are used to working half a world apart. Flikop also says that the forum is a great way to continue the long lasting relationship AIP has had with the Russian Academy of Sciences and its journals. “We have a tremendous history behind us,” Flikop says.

The Melville, NY based publisher markets and distributes the journals worldwide, in addition to hosting the on-line Russian and Ukrainian publications. “AIP works very closely with the Russian publishers,” says Flikop, “in order to maintain the high quality of the journals.”

Those attending this year’s forum include AIP Executive Director, Marc Brodsky, Dr. Rem Petrov, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and several well known Russian scientists who are the editors for the Russian journals.

The Forum is being held on October 4th at the CUNY Graduate Center (365 5th Avenue, New York), and on October 5th at the AIP publishing center in Melville, NY.
