The Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers awarded 1.3 million

The Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers (CNYGEC) at the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at NYU today announced that it has received a $1.3 million grant from the Bureau of Health Resources and Services Administration. The award money will be allocated over a five-year period to provide interdisciplinary, cutting edge knowledge and training on treatments and service delivery models of geriatric care to a variety of health professionals who work with older adults.

"There is a critical need for more geriatric training for the wide range of health professionals that serve older adults," said Terry Fulmer, RN, PhD,FAAN, director of the CNYGEC.

The Consortium utilizes the research and teaching power of its partners which include: New York University, the Brookdale Center on Aging of Hunter College, Stroud Center for Quality of Life at Columbia University, Maimonides Medical Center and Mt. Sinai NYU Health. The Consortium provides a powerful link between gerontological professionals and provider agencies across New York State.

Training methods will include 40-50 hour certificate programs, continuing education conferences and workshops, and outreach and recruitment to a diverse population throughout New York State who practice in underserved areas and have patients from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Topics will include long-term care, nutrition, elder abuse, cultural diversity, pain management, mental health, women's health care, interdisciplinary teams, Alzheimer's disease, nutrition, bioethics, quality of life, nursing, rehabilitation, social work, dentistry, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
