Free colloquium at UC San Diego explores bioengineering in the 21st Century

Meeting Announcement

University of California - San Diego

Three experts from industry, government and the university will come together on August 9 to provide insights into bioengineering, a field critical to future medical advances. The Colloquium on the Perspectives of Bioengineering will be held from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in UCSD¹s Price Center Ballroom, and precedes the groundbreaking of the Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall at the Jacobs School of Engineering. Sponsored by the Jacobs School, this free public lecture is a wonderful opportunity to gain valuable knowledge presented by some of bioengineering¹s premier leaders.

Free parking and shuttle service for the event will be available in UC San Diego Lot 705. From Interstate 5, exit Genesee and head East to Campus Point Drive. Turn Right on Campus Point Drive and left on Voigt Drive to Lot 705. For more information, contact Elizabeth Hickman at 858-822-2290.

The speakers include Wendy Baldwin, Deputy Director for Extramural Research at the National Institutes of Health and Chair of the Bioengineering Consortium (BENCON); Duane Roth, Chief Executive Officer, Alliance Pharmaceutical Corporation; and Shu Chien, Professor of Bioengineering and Medicine, and Director of the Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Baldwin¹s lecture will address ³The future of bioengineering at the National Institutes of Health.² Roth¹s lecture will cover ³Perspectives on the role of bioengineering in industry.² And Dr. Chien¹s will focus on ³Perspectives on bioengineering at UCSD and beyond.²

Bioengineering is an interdisciplinary field in which the principles and tools of traditional engineering fields are applied to biomedical problems. Engineering plays an increasingly important role in medicine with projects that range from basic research in physiology to advances in biotechnology and the improvement of health care delivery.
