New findings about a weight-loss nutritional supplement, threats to America's museum treasures and a high-performance gasoline additive that reduces pollution will be presented August 20-24 at the 220th national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society with 161,000 members. The meeting will be held in Washington, D.C., at the Washington Convention Center and surrounding hotels.
More than 5,500 research papers will be presented to the 10,000 scientists expected to attend. As more information about their presentations becomes available, it will be posted on the World Wide Web, on an embargoed basis, at www.eurekalert.org under the "ACS 220th national meeting" button. In conjunction with this meeting, ACS is inviting reporters to a special master class on the chemistry of dietary supplements, where chemists and researchers will discuss the science underlying a major conference presentation in a symposium on conjugated linoleic acids. Speakers will delve into such issues as analysis of the contents of dietary and herbal supplements, effectiveness and potential health threats, and related regulatory concerns. The class will be held the afternoon of Friday, August 18, the day before the meeting starts.
