New findings about a weight-loss nutritional supplement, threats to America's museum treasures and a high-performance gasoline additive that reduces pollution will be presented August 20-24 at the 220th national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society with 161,000 members. The meeting will be held in Washington, D.C., at the Washington Convention Center and surrounding hotels.

More than 5,500 research papers will be presented to the 10,000 scientists expected to attend. As more information about their presentations becomes available, it will be posted on the World Wide Web, on an embargoed basis, at www.eurekalert.org under the "ACS 220th national meeting" button. Advisories and news releases will be posted at www.acs.org after the embargo is lifted.

The meeting is open to accredited news media. To register contact ACS at newsroom@acs.org . If you have questions, you may contact Charmayne Marsh at y_marsh@acs.org or 202-872-4445. Hotel reservations can be made through ACS at http://www.acs.org/meetings/washington2000/housing.html until Friday, July 28.

In conjunction with this meeting, ACS is inviting reporters to a special master class on the chemistry of dietary supplements, where chemists and researchers will discuss the science underlying a major conference presentation in a symposium on conjugated linoleic acids. Speakers will delve into such issues as analysis of the contents of dietary and herbal supplements, effectiveness and potential health threats, and related regulatory concerns. The class will be held the afternoon of Friday, August 18, the day before the meeting starts. To register, you may contact Charmayne Marsh and you may also contact the ACS Office of Communications at newsroom@acs.org .

ACS President Daryle Busch will sponsor three Presidential events: a symposium on global intellectual property issues for the chemical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries; a panel discussion on the opportunities and risks of online preprints for scholarly journals in chemistry; and a salute to the National Science Foundation on its 50th anniversary.

Meeting highlights include symposia on these topics:

  • Conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs)
  • Deteriorating museum treasures
  • An additive that increases fuel mileage and horsepower with less pollution
  • Endocrine disruptors and pesticide runoff in the Chesapeake Bay -
  • Vitamin D and cancer treatment
  • Alzheimer's and mad cow diseases: a possible link?
