Geriatrics specialist brings special one-day workshop on successful aging to her home town of Herkimer, New York

The Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers is presenting a training workshop "Successful and Healthy Aging" on Thursday, July 13th at the Herkimer County Community College from 9am to 4:30 pm. This workshop is intended for health care providers, nurses, and any individuals with aging parents or friends. To register for the workshop, call 315-866-0300 or toll free 888-GO-4HCC, ext. 306. The cost of the workshop is $24.00.

"We are committed to serving the needs of older adults," said Terry Fulmer, Director of the Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers. "America's older population is growing rapidly and we need to enhance the knowledge and skills of those caring for the elderly. I'm excited to be able to bring this beneficial workshop to my hometown community of Herkimer."

The Workshop will be taught by nationally known experts in the field of aging, including Dr. Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dr. Judy Howe, Phd and Ellen Flaherty, RN, GNP. Some topics to be covered are:

  • An overview of aging,
  • Tips on how to be a terrific caregiver
  • Managing medications
  • Common myths about growing older
  • Team approach to care
  • Learning to communication effectively with healthcare professionals

Assemblyman, Marc W. Butler, a high school friend of Dr. Fulmer's will kick off the workshop with some opening remarks.

The Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers is funded by the Federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Its goal is to improve and expand geriatric health care particularly for minority, multi-ethnic, low-income, and under-served elderly throughout the state of New York. The Consortium brings together the combined resources of Columbia University, New York University, Maimonides Medical Center, Mt. Sinai Medical Center, the Brookdale Center on Aging of Hunter College, New York College of Podiatric Medicine, and SUNY College of Optometry.

As well as being the Director of the Consortium, Dr. Terry Fulmer, is a Professor of Nursing at New York University, Division of Nursing, Director of the New York University Center for Nursing Research and co-Director of the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing. She received her bachelor's degree from Skidmore College and her master's and doctoral degrees from Boston College. Dr. Fulmer's program of research focuses on acute care of the elderly and specifically on the subject of elder abuse and neglect.

Dr. Fulmer is originally from Herkimer, where both her grandmothers resided until their late 90's. In addition, she has six aunts and uncles who live in the Mohawk Valley with their extended families. She enjoys spending her summers in the Adirondacks.
