Annals of Internal Medicine editor Frank Davidoff, MD, FACP to retire July 2001
PHILADELPHIA -- (May 9, 2000) Annals of Internal Medicine Editor Frank Davidoff, MD, FACP, today announced plans to retire from the editorship effective July 1, 2001. Davidoff has been editor of Annals of Internal Medicine, the most widely cited specialty medical journal in the world, since 1995.
"Editing Annals has been a fantastic experience, " Davidoff said. "Leaving will be difficult. At the same time, I feel I've accomplished most of what I set out to do with the journal. Besides, I have reached retirement age, and I and my family agree that it's best to quit while you're ahead." Annals of Internal Medicine is one of the top three peer-reviewed medical journals in the United States and is the leading journal for physicians practicing internal medicine and its subspecialties. Founded in 1927 by the American College of Physicians, it is published twice monthly by the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM), a professional organization representing 115,000 internists, doctors for adults. Annals content includes original research, review articles, commentary, and information about medical humanities. The journal will debut its new online version, annals.org, later this month.
Davidoff has been with ACP-ASIM since 1989, serving first as senior vice president of its Education Division and then assuming the role of editor of Annals of Internal Medicine in 1995.
A search committee composed of College members, staff, and members of the Annals of Internal Medicine editorial board will consider appropriate candidates for the editorial position.
Walter J. McDonald, MD, FACP, ACP-ASIM executive vice president and chief executive officer, said, "Dr. Davidoff will be very difficult to replace. He has had a distinguished career at ACP-ASIM, capping it with his accomplishments of the past five years as editor of Annals of Internal Medicine. We consider him among the deans of medical editors. His tenure as editor of Annals will be remembered for, among other things, the outstanding editorial cadre that he assembled, as well as his editorial innovations, including new formats, invited reviews, internet-based manuscript review and tracking systems, and the new online version of Annals. ACP-ASIM is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing continuing medical education for its members so that internists can provide the best quality care for their patients. It is the second largest medical organization in the United States.
