Grant and Award Announcement

New York University Division of Nursing

Today, nurse researchers are initiating changes and undertaking leadership roles in shaping a health care system that is more responsive to the needs of patients, families and communities. To facilitate this effort, the Division of Nursing at NYU has partnered with the Hugoton Foundation to launch a new Faculty/Staff Nurse Research Fellowship.

A $100,000 award has been made to the Muriel and Virginia Pless Center for Nursing Research at NYU1s Division of Nursing and the NYU Hospitals Center1s Nursing Research Council to support this fellowship.

"Nursing faculty/staff fellowships have not been available before," said Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, Director of the Center. "This is a special opportunity to provide a new model for American nursing."

The fellowships consist of two teams of faculty and staff nurse researchers, as they study pressing clinical practice issues. The faculty members selected for this project include: Elizabeth Ayello, PhD, RN, CS, CETN and Linda Mayberry, PhD, RN, both of whom are professors at the Division of Nursing at New York University. The staff nurses include Geraldine Meany, BSN, RN and Kathryn Guilder, BSN, RN both of whom practice at NYU Hospitals Center.

Dr. Ayello specializes in wound care and pressure ulcers. She is the 1999-2000 President of the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel and Chair of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society Accreditation Committee for 1999-2000. Dr. Ayello and Ms. Meany plan to study the way nurses are currently assessing stage 1 pressure ulcers, and together, they will develop a plan to improve practice in this important area.

Dr. Mayberry is an active researcher in the field of maternal/child health with multiple journal publications focusing on postpartum depression, caring for women in preterm labor, and designing community-based prenatal care for culturally diverse groups. Dr. Mayberry and Ms. Guilder will focus on the management of labor and the use of birthing beds.

Both of these areas are important clinical issues, and the fellowship allows the precious gift of time for these individuals to come together and focus intensively on their respective areas of research.

The Center for Nursing Research was created by a generous grant from the Hugoton Foundation under the leadership of Diane McGivern, Division Head, NYU, Division of Nursing, and Margaret McClure, former Senior Vice President for Nursing at the NYU Medical Center. The goal of the Center is to foster and support nurse researchers as they examine a variety of questions relating to the health and well being of society.
