Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, organized by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO). Full information about the meeting, including special sessions and the text of abstracts with contact data, is available on the AGU Web site: http://www.agu.org/meetings/os00call.html.

Themes
The following themes will predominate at the meeting (listed alphabetically):

  • Air-sea chemistry and dissolved gases
  • Biogeochemical processes
  • Education
  • Land-sea interactions
  • Large-scale transport and circulation
  • Near-shore sediment transport and shelf sedimentation
  • Ocean optics
  • Particulate organic matter degradation and flux
  • Physical and biological interactions
  • Physics of the oceans and climate
  • Planktonic and benthic food webs
  • Polar oceanography
Plenary session
A plenary session will be held on Monday, January 24, from 5:15 to 7:00 P.M. in the Theater of the Convention Center. It will feature two lectures:
"The North Pacific Tropical Gyre: New Views of an Old Ocean," by David M. Karl of the University of Hawaii, and
"A View of the West-Coastal Ocean," by James C. McWilliams of the University of California, Los Angeles.

Special sessions
Following are some of the special sessions scheduled for the meeting, which has drawn 1,840 submissions for oral and poster presentations. Details for each of them may be found at http://www.agu.org/meetings/os00spss.html.

Press Registration
AGU will assist journalists covering the meeting, but will not operate a formal press room. We will provide press badges to qualified journalists and public information officers of government agencies and educational and nonprofit organizations. Press registrants may attend any of the scientific sessions of the meeting. No one will be admitted without a valid badge. Eligibility for press registration is limited to the following persons:

  1. Working press representing bona fide news media with a press card, business card, or letter of introduction from the publication.
  2. Freelance science writers, presenting a current membership card from NASW, a regional affiliate of NASW, ISWA, a letter from a bona fide publication assigning them to cover the meeting, or evidence of work pertaining to science intended for the general public and published in 1999 or 2000.
  3. Public information officers of scientific societies, educational institutions, and government agencies.

Note: Representatives of the business side of news media, publishing houses, and of for-profit corporations must register at the main registration desk and pay the appropriate fees.

AGU Public Information Manager Harvey Leifert will assist members of the press who wish to meet specific scientists for interviews. He may be contacted via a message on the message board or via the meeting's message and information center:
    Phone: 210-582-7100
    Fax: 210-582-7101
    E-mail: hleifert@agu.org

Press registration will take place at the same place as member registration in Exhibit Hall C at the Convention Center. Advance registration is not necessary. Registration hours are:

    Sunday, January 23, 4:00-7:00 P.M.

    Friday, January 28, 8:00-10:00 A.M.

    Abstract books
Science writers planning to cover the meeting may request an advance copy, while supplies last, of the 320 page Abstract book, which summarizes all of the presentations and provides contact information for authors. Send an email message to Harvey Leifert . They will be sent via USPS first class mail, unless recipients provide an account number for an express delivery service (e.g., FedEx, UPS), indicating also the class of service desired (i.e., next morning, second day, etc.).
