Americans for Medical Progrss condemns razor blade mail threats to scientists

Alexandria, VA.--October 28, 1999--Americans for Medical Progress, a national non-profit that works to enhance public understanding and support of biomedical research, condemns the animal rights group "The Justice Department" for sending threatening mail to over 80 research scientists across the United States. The FBI has called the incident a case of domestic terrorism.

"This is not a harmless prank. Threats against medical research target all of us. If scientists cannot conduct their research, we will be denied future medical breakthroughs--the treatments and cures we all anticipate," said Jacquie Calnan, President of Americans for Medical Progress.

Over 40 letters have thus far been received at universities and other research institutions throughout the country. The letters give scientists one year to abandon their research or "your violence will be turned back upon you."

Americans for Medical Progress has been tracking animal rights campaigns against medical research for nearly a decade.

"Threats and violence have absolutely no place in a civil discourse on animal research in medicine," said Ms. Calnan. "AMP calls upon animal rights groups stand up and join us in condemning those who would use intimidation or violence to get their way."

While "The Justice Department" threats have received a great amount of attention this week, it is important to understand that America's animal research scientists are constantly working in an environment of intimidation and harassment. "There's not a week that goes by that we don't hear of an individual being threatened, or receiving a 'death wish'." said Ms. Calnan.

"Scientists understand that there is a small, vocal, and sometimes violent opposition to their work. But they will not be deterred from their quest to improve our health and wellbeing."
