ALEXANDRIA, Va.--The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) is pleased to announce the winners of its annual awards for excellence in the pharmaceutical sciences. The awards will be presented by AAPS President Larry Augsburger, Ph.D. at the 1999 AAPS Annual Meeting on Nov. 14, 1999, in New Orleans.
Robinson Receives AAPS Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award
Joseph R. Robinson, Ph.D. will receive the 1999 AAPS Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award. Dr. Robinson is a pioneer in the area of controlled drug delivery with particular focus in the use of bioadhesive polymers and ocular drug disposition and delivery. He is professor of Pharmacy & Ophthalmology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a past president of both AAPS and the Controlled Release Society. Sponsored by Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, the AAPS Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award recognizes distinguished work in advancing the pharmaceutical sciences and AAPS.
AAPS Research Achievement Awards
The AAPS Research Achievement Awards recognize outstanding scientists who have conducted research that has had a significant impact in the pharmaceutical science field.
Charles Russell Middaugh, Ph.D. will receive the 1999 AAPS Research Achievement Award in Biotechnology. Dr. Middaugh is especially well known for his work in the area of protein and polynucleotide formulation and characterization. He is the Aya and Takeru Higuchi Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas. This award is sponsored by Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc.
Milap C. Nahata, M.S., Pharm.D. will receive the 1999 AAPS Research Achievement Award in Clinical Sciences. Dr. Nahata has published more than 350 peer-reviewed articles on clinical pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and the efficacy, adverse effects, interaction, stability and compatibility of drugs used in pediatric patients. He is the Charles H. Kimberly Professor of Pharmacy and Chair of the Pharmacy Practice and Administration, College of Pharmacy, Ohio State University. This award is sponsored by Axelson BioPharma Research, Inc.
Tsuneji Nagai, Ph.D. will receive the 1999 AAPS Research Achievement Award in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery. Dr. Nagai is well known for his research in the area of bioavailability studies and controlled drug delivery formulations. Dr. Nagai is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pharmaceutics at Hoshi University, Tokyo, Japan. This award is sponsored by Searle.
Nicholas A. Peppas, Sc.D. will receive the 1999 AAPS Research Achievement Award in Pharmaceutical Technologies. Dr. Peppas is internationally known for his research on hydrogels used in the controlled delivery of drugs and proteins, his development of new mucoadhesive delivery systems and his study of novel biomaterials. He is the Showalter Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University. This award is sponsored by SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals.
AAPS New Investigator Grant in Pharmaceutics and the Pharmaceutical Technologies
Jeffrey A. Hughes, Pharm.D., Ph.D. will receive the 1999 AAPS New Investigator Grant in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technologies. Dr. Hughes' research has focused on the intracellular fate of macromolecules to enhance therapeutic approaches for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, tuberculosis and hypertension. He is associate professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Florida. This grant is sponsored by Pfizer Central Research.
AAPS New Investigator Grant in Oral Lipids-Based Drug Delivery Systems
Christopher J.H. Porter, Ph.D. will receive the 1999 AAPS New Investigator Grant in Oral Lipids-Based Drug Delivery Systems. Dr. Porter's most significant contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences include improving the understanding of the impact of lipids on the absorption, distribution, lymphatic transport and bioavailability of water-soluble drugs after oral administration. He is lecturer in Pharmaceutics at Monash University's Victorian College of Pharmacy, Victoria, Australia. This grant is sponsored by GattefossÄ, s.a.
Outstanding Manuscript Award
Shewan M. Aziz, R.Ph., Ph.D.; Mustafa Yatin, Ph.D.; David R. Worthen, R.Ph., M.S., D.R.W.; David W. Lipke, Ph.D.; and Peter A. Crooks, Ph.D. will receive the 1999 AAPS Outstanding Manuscript Award in Analysis and Pharmaceutical Quality for their paper entitled "Novel Techniques for Visualizing the Intracellular Localization and Distribution of Transported Polyamines in Cultured Pulmonary Artery Smooth Muscle Cells." The paper was published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, 17, 307-320 (1998).
Meritorious Manuscript Award
Zheng Yang, Ph.D.; Richard C. Brundage, Pharm.D., Ph.D.; Rashmi H. Barbhaiya, Ph.D.; and Ronald J. Sawchuk, Ph.D. will receive the 1999 AAPS Meritorious Manuscript Award for their paper entitled "Microdialysis Studies of the Distribution of Stavudine into the Central Nervous System in Freely-Moving Rats." This paper was published in Pharmaceutical Research, 14, 865-872 (1997). This award is sponsored by Pfizer Central Research.
