Proposed security restrictions would restrict scientific discovery

Meeting Announcement

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

Washington, DC - August 30, 1999 - Tighter restrictions in the wake of security breaches at the nation's laboratories could jeopardize the free exchange of scientific information. After a Chinese American scientist allegedly leaked sensitive information to the Chinese government, various US Governmental agencies have proposed such changes as restricted license requirements for American scientists and restricted visas for foreign scientists. The AAAS Board of Directors has adopted a resolution that reiterates the organization's position to safeguard open communication among the world's scientific communities.

Scientists and others affected by the proposed restrictions are invited to attend a public information session on Scientific Freedom and National Security at AAAS on August 31, 1999. The conference will offer an overview of the current situation, reaction from the National Academy of Science and a panel discussion.
