NSB Meets In L.A. On Expanded Environmental Research, Education, Assessment

Meeting Announcement

U.S. National Science Foundation

The National Science Board (NSB) meeting at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, February 17-18, will feature a symposium on the National Science Foundation's (NSF) role in environmental research, education and assessment.

Reflecting NSF's long-standing interest in environmental research and education, an NSB Task Force on the Environment was created in August, 1998 to develop guidance for NSF on an appropriate portfolio of activities consistent with the strategy of the President's National Science and Technology Council, as well as other federal bodies and agencies that support environmental programs.

The symposium will allow the Board to learn about a variety of environmental issues from multiple perspectives and promote discussion of environmental research, education and assessment in the context of a larger Federal strategy. A web site provides updated information and solicits community comments. (See: http://www.nsf.gov/nsb/tfe)

The symposium will be preceded by Board discussions of the NSF Strategic Plan and the Board's draft report on high school achievement in mathematics and science.
