Wine intake and diet in a random sample of 48,763 Danish men and women. by Anne Tjonneland, Morten Gronbaek, Connie Stripp and Kim Overvad. Published in the January 1999 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Moderate alcohol drinking protects against coronary heart disease and red wine contains the most anti-oxidant compounds. By showing that wine drinkers eat more fruit, vegetables, and fish than beer or spirits drinkers, this large Danish study suggests that healthy diet contributes significantly to the wine benefit on the heart.
