Early Childhood Anemia and Mild or Moderate Mental Retardation by Elyse Krieger Hurtado, Angelika Hartl Claussen and Keith G. Scott. Published in the January 1999 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

In this study of 10 yr olds in Florida, the authors show that poor school perfomance and mild to moderate mental retardation can be linked to early childhood anemia. The study strengthens the urgency for more effective identification and treatment of iron deficiency in early childhood. Accompanying editorial by Ernesto Pollitt.
