(The need for a national body for research misconduct)

This week the BMJ publishes a retraction of a paper which was published in 1993, owing to the recently revealed research misconduct of one of the authors. In an editorial, Dr Richard Smith, Editor, writes that on the issue of research misconduct, the question is no longer "Do we have a problem?", but rather "How best can we respond?". He comments that the recurrent theme throughout all the relevant papers in this week's issue is that Britain needs a central body to take the lead on this difficult area.
