In this week's BMJ, Benatar and Benatar argue that the exceptions to the requirement for informed consent in research that Len Doyal deems acceptable, would allow the HIV study conducted in the South African province of Natal (See BMJ vol 314 12 April 1997 p.1077-84). However, they argue that the minor invasions of privacy that the research involved could have been avoided altogether.
