SANTA MONICA, CA--The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society is pleased to announce the release of the following excellent resources for researchers, designers, scientists, and students:

1. Designing for an Aging Population: Ten Years of Human Fac tors/Ergonomics Research, edited by Wendy A. Rogers. This compila tion of 84 top-ranked papers from past HFES Annual Meeting proceedings provides easy access to important research about the ways in which systems, tools, and environments can be improved for optimum use by older adults. The editor and her review team evaluated more than 180 papers from the years 1987 to 1996 and selected papers in six areas: Perception, Movement Control, and Biomechanics; Cognition; Technology and Com-puters; Workplace; Health, Warnings, and Safety; and Driving.

ISBN 0-945289-08-1, 408 pp., 8-1/2" x 11", $49 for HFES members, $68 for nonmembers (shipping/handling included in these prices). Outside the U.S., send an additional $5 shipping. For deliveries in California, please add sales tax.

2. Ergonomics and Musculoskeletal Disorders: Research on Manual Materials Handling, 1983-1996, edited by Waldemar Karwowski, Michael S. Wogalter, and Patrick G. Dempsey. Injuries associated with manual materials handling (MMH) represent the single largest source of losses in many industries, costing billions of dollars for workers' compensation, medical care, and lost wages. These losses explain why the research directed toward the prevention of MMH-related injuries in the industrial workplace has been one of the most active areas of the field of industrial ergonomics. This book contains 61 of the best papers from the last 14 years of HFES Annual Meeting proceedings, one of the foremost sources of basic and applied research in this area.

Roscoe. This first offering in the HFES History Monographs series is a brief retrospective account of the emergence of engineering psychologists in the military, academia, the aviation industry, troubleshooting system problems, consulting, and course setting for civil and military agencies. Roscoe provides an overview of the field and its linkage with human factors; the driving forces within the field in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s; and the contributions of key individuals, including McFarland, Williams, Fitts, Flanagan, Mead, Chapanis, Licklider, Melton, and many others.
