Medical experts from around the world will gather Oct. 15 to 17 in Seattle for a review of state-of-the-art developments in liver transplantation at the Fourth Congress of the International Liver Transplantation Society.

Among the latest advances to be discussed are innovative strategies to help reduce the shortage of donor organs for liver transplantation. These include improvements in techniques for split-liver transplants, in which one donated liver is divided and used for two patients.

Additional topics for plenary sessions, workshops and abstract presentations include:

  • liver transplantation in children
  • controversies in immunosuppression
  • the impact of infectious diseases, such as hepatitis
  • radiological advances
  • critical care issues

The meeting is co-sponsored by the University of Washington School of Medicine Division of Transplantation Surgery and the International Liver Transplantation Society.
