Radiation Therapy For Children Featured At ASTRO Meeting In Orlando, FL

Studies covering topics ranging from the quality of life after permanent prostate implants to using radiation therapy to treat soft tissue sarcomas in children will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. The meeting will be held in Orlando, FL October 19-23 at the Orlando Convention Center. Highlights of the meeting include:

Sunday, October 19

  • Radiation is effective in treating Endometrial Cancer. (This poster will be on display through Wednesday, October 23.)

  • Hyperfactionated 3D Conformal radiotherapy and concurrent chemotherapy is a well tolerated lung-cancer treatment that leads to better survival rates. (This poster will be on display through Wednesday, October 23.)

  • 8:30 a.m. President's Categorical Course on Hodgkin's Disease and
    5:00 p.m. Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Monday, October 20, 1997

  • 10:27 a.m. Radiation therapy has provided excellent survival rates for children with soft tissue sarcomas. (Oral Presentation)

  • 11:03 a.m. Women with a family history of breast cancer do not have a higher risk of local failure following breast-conserving therapy than do other patients. (Oral Presentation)

  • 12:57 p.m. A study indicates that radiation can reduce the risk of arteries becoming clogged again after being cleared. (Oral Presentation)

  • 1:45 p.m. External beam radiation therapy is effective in treating melanoma. (Oral Presentation)

  • 8:45 a.m. A refresher course focusing on a variety of brain tumors and how contemporary radiotherapy effects treatment outcome.

  • 10:15- Permanent prostate implants are well tolerated by patients and
    12:00 p.m. allow them to maintain a high degree of sexual quality and function. (Poster Discussion) CAROLYN

  • 10:51 a.m. Women under 50 benefit as much from mammography as older women. (Oral Presentation)
