HFES Technical Program Features State-Of-The-Art Human/Technology Research

Human Factors and Ergonomics Society

Santa Monica, CA--The 41st Annual Meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society will be held September 22-26 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The technical program, workshops, facility tours, and social events have been set, and the meeting promises to deliver its usual wealth of knowledge about ways to improve safety and efficiency in human-technology systems.

The meeting begins with hands-on workshops, most of which are offered on Monday, on topics such as planning and design for the World Wide Web, cognitive task analysis, human factors and the health care field, anthropometry, using ISO software ergonomics standards, questionnaire design and use, and psychoacoustics.

Diverse topics will be featured in the technical program, which opens on Tuesday morning after the presidential address by Arthur D. Fisk and the keynote address by Everett M. Rogers, an eminent sociologist who will speak on the diffusion of technological innovations in cultures. More than 80 lecture, panel, symposium, poster, and debate sessions have been scheduled, including the following:

  • Driving simulation
  • Input devices for consumer products
  • Speech technology and the future
  • Occupational epidemiology
  • Training in virtual environments
  • Advances in automation research
  • Cumulative trauma disorder
  • Effective management and productivity in organizations
  • Innovations in medical device design
  • Usability in selecting office seating
  • Intelligent embedded training
  • Coping with information overload
  • Human subject modeling
  • Technology and aging

Also featured are sessions focusing on the needs of the small business owner and other practitioner issues, as well as 90 interactive poster sessions.

Site tours will be offered at Sandia National Lab, Los Alamos National Lab, Intel, Kirtland Air Force Base, Levi Strauss, Sumitomo, the FAA Aging Aircraft NDI Validation Center, and the Air National Guard 150th Fighter Wing.

The ever-popular HFES Placement Service will be open Monday through Friday to assist job seekers and employers. Wednesday evening features the Annual Banquet and Awards Presentation, when human factors/ergonomics professionals will be recognized for distinguished contributions to the field and for election to Fellow status.

Registration materials and the preliminary program will be mailed in early July. Registration and housing forms will also be available at the HFES Web site at http://hfes.org.
