Microbes turn the underside of the sea ice brown or green, sometimes forming thick mats in the protected area under the ice. Some emit a distinctive seaweed-like odor. New experiments reveal how these algae, the base of the food web in polar environments, adjust to seasonal changes in temperature and salinity.
