Beech tree roots with mycorrhizal fungi (IMAGE) Holden Forests & Gardens Caption Under the microscope, these beech tree roots (Fagus grandifolia) are full of root tips colonized by a couple different types of mycorrhizal fungi. Researchers at the Holden Arboretum collected samples like this one and counted over 70,000 root tips to quantify the effects of beech leaf disease on this important mutualism between tree and fungi.
