How 5-ALA+SFC helps mitochondria bypass CI deficiency.

Flies with Complex I deficiency cannot activate the cascade of reactions required to make ATP. When fed 5-ALA+SFC, other protein complexes such as Complex II and IV are more active and help bypass the lack of CI.
