STAR detector (IMAGE) DOE/Brookhaven National Laboratory Caption The Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) is a house-sized particle detector more commonly known as STAR. It specializes in tracking thousands of particles that stream out of RHIC collisions. By looking for correlations between pairs of particles emerging from different types of collisions, scientists are gaining new insight into the subatomic building blocks that make up ordinary matter.
