Network of the neurons (IMAGE) Florida Atlantic University Caption Long-term running substantially modifies the network of the neurons generated in young adult mice upon middle-age. Importantly, exercise increases input from hippocampal interneurons (red cells) onto ‘old’ adult-born neurons. These interneurons may play a role in reducing aging-related hyperexcitability of the hippocampus and thereby benefit memory function.
