Early determination of a the sex of a chicken embryo in an egg would avoid culling of male chicks and reduce waste in the poultry industry. Work by UC Davis and Sensit Ventures Inc. shows that it is possible to differentiate 8-day old eggs with 80 percent accuracy based on volatile chemicals diffusing through the egg shell.
