Conventional biosensors take a lock-and-key approach with limited sensing capability and limited downstream signaling (gray arcs). The new biosensors engineered by the group of Patrick Barth at EPFL are designed to sense flexible ligands (blue) with rewired signal transmission that strengthens downstream signaling activity (black arcs).
