University of Illinois soil scientists Tanjila Jesmin (left) and Richard Mulvaney (right) found that poor agricultural soils aren’t improved with the addition of nitrogen fertilizers and crop residues. Instead, microbes in low-nitrogen-supplying soils mineralized carbon faster than higher-quality soils. The results have implications for intensively cropped fields and nitrogen management protocols.
