Rice University graduate student Maxwell Hunt holds a plate of glowing E. coli. Rice synthetic biologists added fluorescent reporter genes to the bacteria and wired the genes to a sensor that pathogenic bacteria use to infect humans. The modification allowed the researchers to rapidly screen large libraries of peptides and determine which ones trigger the sensor.
