Two elephants greeting each other (IMAGE) Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics Caption Two elephants greeting each other with gentle touch at the Addo Elephant National Park in south Africa. Elephants are highly social creatures, and have been documented to engage in many prosocial behaviors such as coalition formation, shared parenting, offering protection and comfort to other elephants in distress, helping dying or ill elephants, and cooperating in string-pulling tasks. In addition, much of the wild elephant’s behavioral repertoire is socially transmitted, relying on a rich multimodal communication system that includes vocal, visual, tactile and chemical signals.
