This topographical “map” shows the step-by-step development of E. coli’s resistance to tetracycline, a common antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of infections. The bacteria at the peak of the “mountains” (in red) have the best fitness and most likely chance of resisting the effects of the antibiotic.
