Maternal autonomy support and controlling parenting can decrease or increase the risk for mental illnesses in adolescents, respectively. The relationship can be mediated by adolescents’ satisfaction of basic psychological needs. However, a new study found that adolescents may perceive parenting differently than their mothers. But irrespective of these differences, both points of view can independently predict basic psychological needs satisfaction and depressive symptoms in adolescents. In the above figure the dotted lines indicate that the relations were negative.
