一つ一つの丸っこい大きな塊が一つの果物のようにも見えるが、数千～数万個もの果実の集合体である。実際の果実は0.3mm程度と極めて小さい。よく目を凝らしてみると、この塊は赤いつぶつぶで構成されていることが分かるが、つぶつぶは果実ではなく葉が変形した器官で、実際の果実はこのつぶつぶの下に隠されている。
