1-PKD cyst expansion (IMAGE)
Caption
An illustration shows fluid absorption and cyst expansion in kidney organoids infected with polycystic kidney disease (PKD). The outward-facing proximal tubular epithelial cells (green) absorb fluid, generating pressure that causes expansion and stretching of the epithelium, creating cysts. It is unclear why normal epithelial cells resist cyst formation.
