The 'Chinoike Jigoku' onsen in Beppu city

The 'Chinoike Jigoku' located in Beppu city. It is one of the oldest known onsen in Japan, dating back to at least the Nara period (710-794 AD). Its distinct color comes from the hot red mud composed of iron and magnesium oxides that erupts from underground and pools in the pond. At 78 ℃, it is designated for viewing and not for bathing.
