Phase diagram of CuO (IMAGE) National Institute for Materials Science, Japan Caption When a cupric oxide compound is subjected to high pressure, its Cu–O–Cu bond angle widens, strengthening the magnetic interaction between the ions. Using this phenomenon, this research team experimentally confirmed that the compound is able to exhibit its multiferroic state at room temperature.
